A fire erupted at 1535 Middle Road, located near the intersection of Deep Hole Road and Middle Road, at around 1:40 p.m. The fire appears to have started in a pickup truck parked next to the home and spread to the house, according to fire department personnel at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The occupants escaped from the home without injury, according to authorities. One Firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion at the scene.

Riverhead Fire Department responded with four engines, one ladder truck and fire police, Riverhead Fire Chief Joseph Hartmann said in a phone interview. Approximately 35 Riverhead volunteer firefighters responded to the alarm, Hartmann said. Flanders Fire Department and Ridge Fire Department responded to the scene on a mutual aid call from Riverhead. Hampton Bays Fire Department responded to Riverhead headquarters to stand by if needed to answer additional calls while Riverhead was at the scene of the working structure fire.

At around 6PM the Riverhead Fire Department wrapped up firefighting operations at the scene. Riverhead Police have reopened all area roads.

The scene was turned over to the Riverhead Town Fire Marshal’s Office and Suffolk County Police Department Arson Squad for investigation.
