A fire at the Exxon gas station on Edwards Avenue in Calverton drew multiple fire departments to safely put it out Thursday afternoon.
The fire, which caused clouds of dark smoke to billow from the gas station’s mini-mart, apparently started in the food preparation area of the gas station’s Subway shortly before 4 p.m., according to an employee.
“I heard a ‘pop’, turned around and saw flames,” the employee told a reporter. A customer in the store called 911, she said.
Everyone was able to safely evacuate from inside the building, she said.
The Exxon is located at the exit 71 on-ramp of the Long Island Expressway.
Numerous local fire and rescue departments responded to assist Riverhead Fire Department fight the fire, including Manorville, Flanders, Wading River and Jamesport, in addition to ambulances from Riverhead, Flanders and Shirley. Riverhead Fire Chief Kevin Brooks declared the fire under control at 4:29 p.m.
The Brookhaven Town fire marshal and Suffolk County Arson Squad also responded to the scene to investigate.
